Charlie Sand[]

Charlie Sand was one of Edward's drivers. He was part of Edward's crew alongside the fireman; Sidney Hever.

Biography[]

When Edward arrived at Wellsworth after meeting Trevor, the Vicar noticed that Edward was upset and he asked Charlie what the matter was. Charlie then explained about Trevor's situation.

  • Charlie Sand's first name was revealed in the second series episode, Saved from Scrap. While his surname was not revealed in Thomas & Friends, it was first revealed in The Railway Series book, Edward the Blue Engine.
  • Several different large scale models were used for Charlie Sand:
    • In the episodes Bertie's Chase and Saved from Scrap, a brown-haired model with brown eyes was used, however, in one scene from Bertie's Chase, a model with blue eyes was used instead.
    • In the episode Old Iron, a brown-haired model was also used, with either him or Sidney Hever having a beard. However, later on in the episode, a blond-haired model was used instead.

Sidney Hever[]

Sidney Hever was one of Edward's firemen. He was part of Edward's crew alongside the driver; Charlie Sand.

Biography[]

Sidney Hever seemed to have a hobby of singing. He once sang the song Oh Dear! What Can the Matter Be? while he, Charlie Sand and Edward were waiting for Thomas to arrive with his passengers. He then climbed on top of Edward's cab to look for Thomas, only to see Bertie. Unbeknownst to Sidney, Bertie had to take Thomas' passengers for him due to Thomas' fireman not showing up for work. Sidney assumed that Bertie was on a coach tour before climbing back down.

The Firelighter[]

The Firelighter is a specialist fireman who ignites the steam engines' fireboxes before they start work.

Biography[]

During some mornings, the firelighter arrives to ignite fireboxes for the engines, so when the engine's crew arrive, the engine is steamed up and ready to go. One day, Gordon's fire would not light, to which the firelighter stated that there must be "gremlins" about.

In the second series, the firelighter's uniform consists of a white shirt with blue overalls. He wears a grey flat cap. From the fifth series onwards, the firelighter's uniform consists of blue trousers, a black tie and a white shirt with a blue jacket with light blue accents over it. He wears brown overalls and a brown peaked cap.

The Careless Cleaner[]

The Careless Cleaner is a cleaner who works for the North Western Railway.

Biography[]

After Thomas planned to prove to Percy and Toby that he could manage without a driver, the cleaner meddled with Thomas' controls, which caused Thomas to move and crash into the Tidmouth Stationmaster's House. It is unknown what happened to the cleaner after the accident.

The Ulfstead Fogman[]

The Ulfstead Fogman is a fogman who works for the North Western Railway.

Biography[]

While Percy was on his way to Ulfstead with the mail train, the fogman was standing on the line and stopped Percy by waving a red lamp. The fogman explained that the village was cut off by snow and that they required snowploughs, workmen and a helicopter. He ordered Percy to leave the mail train in a siding and go back quickly for help.

The Ulfstead Fogman's uniform consists of light blue-grey trousers, a black tie and a white shirt with a light blue-grey jacket over it. He wears a light blue-grey cap.

The Railway Board[]

The Railway Board are the North Western Railway's board of directors.

Biography[]

When Harvey was first being unloaded at Brendam Docks, the Fat Controller and the Railway Board were there to see his arrival. The Fat Controller explained to Thomas and Percy that Harvey was going to give the Railway Board a demonstration and they would determine if Harvey would join the railway. The next day, Percy derailed with some trucks at Bulgy's Bridge, blocking the road. Bertie, who was carrying the Railway Board, could not get past. The Fat Controller informed Harvey of the situation and he arrived to rerail Percy and the trucks, which created a demonstration for the Railway Board. The Railway Board were impressed with Harvey's demonstration and decided that he should join the railway.

Two members of the Railway Board were present at the launching of the Mayor's yacht and the official opening of Great Waterton.

Mr. Percival's Assistant is a man who often helps Mr. Percival while he is working.

Biography[]

Mr. Percival's assistant often accompanies him to the various locations around the Skarloey Railway. When Mr. Percival is not riding his bicycle, the assistant carries it around for him.

Mr. Percival's assistant's uniform consists of blue trousers, a black tie and a white shirt with a blue jacket with light blue accents over it. He wears brown overalls. He also wears a brown peaked cap, which was changed to blue in the twelfth series.

Bob is a man who works for the North Western Railway. While his exact position is unknown, he is sometimes either Thomas' driver or fireman.

Biography[]

When out driving together one summer, Bob and Thomas encountered a fire close to the line. Bob helped to extinguish the fire by feeding water from Thomas' tank.

Albert is a workman who works for the North Western Railway.

Biography[]

When Thomas arrived at Knapford after transporting a mother and her baby, he found Albert waiting for him. Albert thanked Thomas for babysitting and told him that the passengers were his wife and son. The Fat Controller praised Thomas for his good work and told Albert that he deserved a week's holiday. Realising that they had not picked a name, Albert and his wife decided to name their baby 'Thomas' after the day's events.

Old Jim[]

Old Jim is a man who works for the North Western Railway. He works inside Sir Topham Hatt's Office, though he formerly worked as a guard.

Biography[]

On Old Jim's retirement day, he was to get a watch in honour of his services, which he informed Percy about. As Percy knew Old Jim loved his job, the green engine decided to speak to Sir Topham Hatt about the situation. However, Sir Topham Hatt agreed with the thought that Old Jim was too old and slow to keep his job as a guard. That evening, people and engines arrived to see Old Jim receive the watch by Sir Topham Hatt. Old Jim sadly thanked Sir Topham Hatt for the watch, but to his surprise, Sir Topham Hatt asked him if he would like to work in his office to help him keep it nice and tidy. Old Jim gladly accepted the job and Sir Topham Hatt informed him that it was Percy's idea, after the green engine had heard Sir Topham Hatt stating how messy his office was. Percy was very grateful that Old Jim was still going to be around.

Fred is a fogman who works for the Skarloey Railway.

Biography[]

After noticing some trees on fire, Fred telephoned the fire brigade and placed detonators on the tracks, to warn Peter Sam of the danger ahead. After going over the detonators, Peter Sam stopped just in time.

Terrey is a ticket officer who works at Knapford Station.

Biography[]

Once, Terrey lost his glasses and ended up giving the wrong tickets to all the passengers. An inspector noticed this and informed Sir Topham Hatt. Terry and the station staff then looked for the missing glasses and found them in the lost property office. After Terrey got his glasses back, he was sure that there would be no more ticket trouble.

Brian[]

Brian was one of Henry's drivers.

Biography[]

When Henry's driver was ill, Sir Topham Hatt had arranged for Brian to take over for the day. Henry was very happy, as next to his regular driver, Brian was his favourite as he knew all about wildlife. Brian particularly loved birds and he knew all their names and calls. While pulling coaches, Henry spotted a crowd of people on the line and stopped. After Brian and Henry's fireman found out what the people were doing, they informed Henry that the people had spotted a rare bird in a tree. Henry was worried that the crowd would frighten the bird and Brian confessed that he also thought the same thing. Henry then had a plan which he whispered to Brian, which was to tell the twitchers to board his "Twitchers' Special" train and that he would show them some more rare birds on Sodor. While the twitchers boarded Henry's train, Brian called the Sodor Bird Society and asked them to take care of the bird until it flew away again. Meanwhile, Henry set off with the birdwatchers. At the end of the day, the twitchers were delighted with Brian and Henry's special tour. Brian then got a call to say that the rare bird had flown away in the direction of its home. Brian congratulated Henry on a job well done and Henry was happy.[2]

Ted was one of Henry's firemen.

Biography[]

During Christmas, Ted constantly practised carols during the day for the carol service on Christmas Eve. On the night before the service, Ted let the engines use their tuned whistling to help him practice. But when the church organ broke, Ted had an idea and before long, the engine orchestra were whistling the tunes to the Christmas carols. The night proved to be a great success and Sir Topham Hatt was pleased with all of his engines.[3]

Rusty and Dusty are the names of several station sweepers who appear alongside The Fat Controller at both Days Out with Thomas events, Thomas Land shows, and other Thomas & Friends events in the UK since the 2010s.

Rusty and Dusty have been portrayed by various performers, including male, female, and mixed-gender pairings, with the gender of each character varying in the mixed-gender portrayals.
