Plarail (プラレール) is a Japanese battery-operated toy train system manufactured by Takara TOMY. Starting in 1992, Thomas and Friends characters were introduced into the line. The engines run on plastic blue track and the roadway vehicles run on a grey road.

History

In 1959 TOMY introduced three hand-powered trains for their Plarail toy train system.

October of 1961 saw the expansion of the toys being powered by battery.

Thomas and Friends characters were introduced into the line up in March of 1992, the first release being Thomas himself with Annie and Clarabel. Subsequent years saw more characters being added. Each railroad vehicle came with at least two pieces of rolling stock.

Starting in 2003 a numbering system was created, every character was labeled under "T". Engines T-01 to T-06 saw some updates to their design plus some also received different rolling stock.

In 2012 the numbering system changed from "T" to "TS", some characters got moved up or down the system.
