- "Thomas and Rosie sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G!"
- ― Bill and Ben teasing Thomas and Rosie
Rosie Is Red is the twenty-second episode of the twenty-second series.
Plot
It is Valentine's Day on Sodor, which means more post for Percy to pull. Unfortunately, Diesel is playing his cruel jokes and bumps Rosie's trucks full of roses which scatter all over the docks. Cranky gets cross with Rosie. When Thomas attempts to stand up for Rosie against Diesel, Diesel thought Thomas was sticking up for Rosie because she is his favourite as Bill and Ben arrive. Rosie replies that Thomas was sticking up for her because he is her friend. Then he gets teased by Bill, Ben and Diesel for Rosie being Thomas' "special friend". Then Bill and Ben make Thomas and Rosie feel embarrassed when Bill and Ben sing, "Thomas and Rosie sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G", which disgusts Thomas when he imagines him and Rosie kissing in a tree offscreen and becomes embarrassed and cross. This leads to Thomas distancing himself from Rosie and being unkind to her to stop himself from getting teased. Thomas is at the washdown when Rosie arrives, wanting to thank Thomas for sticking up for her. Thomas knew that he stood up for Rosie but pretended not to remember because he does not want to be teased. He thought he was being very clever. This ends up embarrassing and offending Rosie and he takes off, with Henrietta questioning this. Rosie felt sad and she thought Thomas did not like her anymore.
Thomas is later told by the Fat Controller to go to Ulfstead Castle to pick up some very important passengers, and to meet Rosie at Vicarstown. Then, he tells Rosie to take some vans to Vicarstown, where she will meet Thomas. The two tank engines did not want to see each other, but they also did not want to let the Fat Controller down. The two do all it takes to avoid coming across each other. As Rosie collects her delivery, she rushes the workmen to hurry up as she wants to get to Vicarstown quickly before Thomas. Edward is puzzled, and Rosie explains that Thomas was so rude to her. Edward did not understand and he knew that Thomas liked Rosie. After having a conversation with Edward, Rosie runs away quickly and takes the shunter's pole before it can be unhooked. Meanwhile, Gordon comes up to Thomas and teases him, telling him that Rosie is behind him. This shocks Thomas, but luckily the signalman changes the points because Toby and Henrietta are in front of Thomas, who goes onto a siding and he hides behind Toby and Henrietta, evading Rosie. When Thomas tells Henrietta about his problem, she convinces Thomas to not care about what the other engines think, and to talk about it with Rosie and Thomas knew Henrietta was right. Thomas also knew that he and Rosie have been good friends and Thomas also realised that he hurt Rosie's feelings.
At Vicarstown, the Fat Controller is waiting anxiously for Thomas and Rosie to arrive. Rosie arrives and the Fat Controller asks her to turn around and come to the other side of the platform. The Fat Controller wonders where Thomas is and he too arrives. Then Lady Hatt arrives too. Thomas and Rosie later arrive at Vicarstown, and meet each other face-to-face. Thomas apologises to Rosie for how he acted, and apologises for hurting her feelings, telling her that he does like her a lot - as a friend. At first, Thomas thought that Rosie was not going to say anything, but she happily states that she feels the same way. Thomas beams and is glad they got it sorted out. Thomas is glad that his friendship with Rosie was restored. The two tank engines felt much better and Rosie was glad that Thomas still likes her, but just as friends. Then Thomas and Rosie saw that Thomas' very important passengers were a musician quartet. The Fat Controller finds Lady Hatt and declares his love for her. It is revealed what Rosie and Thomas were meant to do; the Fat Controller declared, "Rosie is Red. Thomas is Blue. And my Darling Lady Hatt, I love you". Then he has a quartet of violin players play for her, and gives her a kitten and several flowers as presents. Inside of Rosie's trucks, there are crates of roses. Inside of Annie and Clarabel's windows are red and blue heart lights. This makes Thomas and Rosie very happy to be just good friends and nothing more.

Trivia
- Going by production order, this is the tenth episode of the twenty-second series.
- This episode shows the first romantic couple between two people of the same sex in the franchise, with the workmen in the beginning.
- This marks the second time Edward interacts with Rosie. The first was in the tenth series episode, Thomas and the Birthday Mail, albeit offscreen.
- The title of this episode is a reference to the first verse of the phrase, "Roses are Red".
- This is the series' first and only Valentine's Day episode of Thomas & Friends, until the Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go second series episode, A Very Percy Valentine's Day (not counting the third series episode Thomas, Percy and the Post Train which was released with the Valentines day episode of Shining Time Station).
- This marks the fifth time an engine is seen with an item in their mouth. In this case, Thomas caught a rose in his teeth, similar to a Flamenco dancer.
- This episode marks the last of three things:
- The last episode to feature Percy without his twenty-third series cosmetic details.
- Rosie's final episode with a leading role.
- Dowager Hatt's last appearance in a normal-length episode.
- This episode marks Henrietta's only speaking role and Lady and Dowager Hatt's only appearances in the twenty-second series.
- This episode first aired in the UK on Valentine's Day 2019.
- On the Nick Jr. US airing of this episode, it was paired with the twenty-second series episode, Tiger Trouble.
Goofs
- When Rosie meets Thomas at the washdown, Thomas' face shifts slightly, while his body remains static.
- Right before Thomas leaves the washdown, his face is out of alignment with his smokebox.
- A few audiobytes are missing in the US dub:
- Percy's grunting when he struggles to pull the mail vans.
- Two of Thomas' gasps.
- This episode is mistakenly labelled as "Hunt the Car" on IMDb, which is the US title of the final episode of the twenty-second series.[1]
