- "Thanks, Elizabeth! We couldn't have done it without you."
"I know!" - ― Rusty and Elizabeth
Rusty's Plan is a magazine story illustrated using photographs from the television series.
Plot
Rusty often visits his friends, Rheneas and Skarloey, on the mountain railway. He helps them keep the line clear of rubbish. One day, the Fat Controller tells the engines that the mountain line will have to close and Rheneas and Skarloey will be reassigned to the quarry. Skarloey and Rheneas are sad working at the quarry; they miss their line with its splendid trees and mountains. Rusty has a plan to help repair the mountain line. The Fat Controller tells Rusty it will be a big job, but he can try.
Rusty, Skarloey and Rheneas work hard all day on the old line. Just then, Rusty sees Elizabeth steaming by and tricks the snooty vintage lorry into helping haul branches and rubbish.
Soon, the line looks as good as new. The Fat Controller is most impressed with everyone's hard work. Skarloey and Rheneas are very happy to be going home. Rusty feels proud and even Elizabeth is happy, tooting her horn in celebration.
