Seeing Is Believing is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series. Originally published in an unknown year, it was re-published in 2023 and again in 2025 as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series with slight alterations to the images and text.

Plot

One day, Merlin arrives on Sodor to deliver some steel and visit his friend, Thomas. Merlin is an experimental engine who believes he can turn invisible but in reality he just lets off steam and stays visible. Thomas is very pleased to see Merlin again. That day, Thomas and Merlin met lots of engines and Merlin tells them all that he can turn invisible.

As Thomas and Merlin puff through the countryside, they meet Trevor who is keen to show off his new, loud steam whistle. Thomas thinks he now sounds like a big steam engine.

That evening, at Tidmouth Sheds, all the engines are talking excitedly about Merlin. Percy is the only engine who hasn't seen the disappearing engine and that makes him feel sad.

The next day, Percy sets out to find Merlin. He looks all over Sodor and is just about to give up when he hears a very loud whistle. Percy can't see anyone around and concludes it must be Merlin the Invisible Engine. Percy doesn't know he had only heard Trevor's new steam whistle. He tells the other engines all about his encounter that night in the shed. Percy believes he had seen the invisible engine and that makes him fell very happy.
