The seventeenth series of Thomas & Friends was released on DVD in April 2013 in the US and Canada before airing on television, first airing in the UK on 3 June 2013 and in the US on 7 October 2013.
Production
Before this season was released in 2013, Mattel bought HiT Entertainment in February 2012 for a grand total of $680 million in US currency, and so the deal to have HiT sold to Mattel was made and production of the show's sixteenth series was wrapped up in 2011 and ready to go the next year. Nitrogen Studios parted ways with HiT Entertainment after Blue Mountain Mystery finished up production, and Sharon Miller stepped down as head writer and continued to be the voice director for the show until the very end. HiT Entertainment continued getting credited for producing episodes for the show until the twentieth series, with Mattel fully taking over as Mattel Television, under the name Mattel Creations at the time of 2017-2019, when the twenty-first and twenty-second seasons came out from 2017-2018.
This series was the first with twenty-six episodes since the eleventh series. This was also the first series to be narrated by Mark Moraghan, the first to be animated by Arc Productions (which, under various names, would provide the show's visuals until its cancellation in 2021) and the first to feature Andrew Brenner as the show's head writer. Owing to Brenner and producer Ian McCue's attempts to return the show to a more Railway Series-reminiscent tone, this series marks a notable shift from the previous nine series. This series' dialogue and narration is noticeably more articulate and lexically-comprehensive than its immediate predecessors, with rhyming and alliteration almost entirely eliminated. Similarly, a number of episodes featured plots relating to nonfictional railway practices, more dialogue and major roles were assigned to the show's human characters (most notably Sir Robert Norramby) and the engine cast was expanded further beyond the "Steam Team" to suggest a larger working railway system, resulting in the reinstatement of several long-absent secondary characters (such as Duck, Bill, Ben and Harvey) to regular speaking roles.
