The twenty-fourth and final series of Thomas & Friends premiered in the United Kingdom on 2 May 2020 and was released via Netflix in the United States on 1 May and 1 September 2020.
This series was produced in honour of the 75th anniversary of The Railway Series.
Production[]
Mattel greenlit a new series and several specials for Thomas & Friends that premiered in 2020 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the franchise. As with the previous series, production consisted of 20 11-minute episodes as well as three 22-minute specials following the then-recent revamp of the series [1].
David Stoten was announced as the new head writer for the series, succeeding Andrew Brenner following Steam Team to the Rescue. This was the final series animated by Jam Filled Toronto, with the animation company wrapping up production on the show for the final time by 21 December 2019 [2]. While nearly every episode has a copyright of 2019, Thomas and the Royal Engine has a copyright of 2020, making it the final production for the original Thomas & Friends television series.
Unlike the previous two series, the twenty-fourth series does not have an even split between Sodor episodes and international episodes. Instead, there are five international episodes (one per country), while the remaining eighteen episodes are based on the Island of Sodor. Additionally, several episodes from this series lack the fantasy sequences which were present in every episode in the previous two series.
In 2020, it was revealed by Sodor Island Fansite/Forums that the series had officially concluded and not been greenlit for future series due to the failure and poor advertising of the Big World! Big Adventures! rebrand.
Later that same year, Mattel revealed a second installment, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, which uses 2D animation instead of CGI and being animated by Nelvana from then on. All previous media is not canon to this incarnation, confirming it as a completely separate show.
