The twenty-fourth and final series of Thomas & Friends began airing on 2nd May 2020 in the UK and was released on Netflix on 1st May 2020 in the US.

Mattel green-lit a new series and several specials for Thomas & Friends that premiered in 2020 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the franchise. Production consisted of 20 11-minute episodes as well as three 22-minute specials following the recent revamp of the series[1].

David Stoten was announced as the new head writer for the series, succeeding Andrew Brenner [2]. This is also marks the final series animated by Jam Filled Toronto [3].

Unlike the previous two series, Series 24 does not have a half-and-half split between Sodor episodes and International episodes. Instead, there are six International episodes - one per country - while the rest of the episodes are based on the Island of Sodor. Additionally, several episodes from this series lack the fantasy sequences which were present in every episode of the previous two series.

In 2020, it was revealed by Sodor Island Fansite/Forums that the series had been cancelled due to the failure of the Big World! Big Adventures! rebrand and would not be returning for a twenty-fifth series, although the franchise itself will continue on.

Also in 2020, the franchise later revealed that the show would be rebooted from scratch with Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go!, which uses Flash animation instead of CGI and would be animated by Nelvana from then on. All previous media is no longer considered canon to the reboot, the majority of the characters will be retired from the series, with only a few returning. A few months later, it was revealed that the new series is a completely separate show rather than a “Series 25” due to the cancellation of the 1984-2021 series.
