Background Information
Sidney is a fictional standard gauge diesel locomotive created by Sharon Miller.
In 2011, Sidney made his debut in the special Day of the Diesels. His last appearance was in the twenty-third series episode Steam Team to the Rescue, which was released in 2019.
In his introduction, Sidney was voiced by Kerry Shale (UK/US) in the CGI version of the series on both sides of the Atlantic, respectively. Since 2013, Sidney has been voiced by Bob Golding, also in both English dubs.
Sidney is based on the BR Class 08.
Behind the Scenes
CGI Model
In 2010, Sidney was modelled in full CGI by Nitrogen Studios for the 2011 film, Day of the Diesels. The model was "hand-sculpted" in Maya, a 3D animation and modelling software. According to Greg Tiernan, the CGI models are subjected to many rounds of review before they are submitted to HiT Entertainment for final input and approval.
Prior to being given a name, Sidney was referred to as "Temp Diesel C". As stated in concept art, his model is a retexture of Diesel with a new face. The concept art itself is edited from 'Arry and Bert with added ladders from Diesel; however, his final model reuses Diesel's body mesh as per the listed instructions.
While Nitrogen Studios rigged his face and upper body for Day of the Diesels, Arc Productions rigged the chassis later for The Missing Christmas Decorations. Issues with his rigging resulted in his wheels turning half the speed they should be.
Model Changes
Sidney has had modifications throughout the CGI series. These include:
- Series 17:
- He received his own wheels.
- Big World! Big Adventures!:
- He gained a headlamp above his face.
- Series 22:
- He gained a tail-lamp on the back of his cab.
