The Signalman controls the points and signals that send the engines to their destinations or runaway trains into sidings. The signalmen work in the signal boxes.
Occasionally, signalmen have been known to fall asleep on the job, (resulting in accidents) and faint when an accident almost happens.
Uniform
A signalman's uniform consists of a white shirt with blue overalls and a blue or brown cap. Most signalmen wear a jacket, which is usually grey or green.

- To date, only two signalmen have been named: Mr. Edwards and Simon.
- The Rev. W. Awdry criticised the third series episode, Henry's Forest for Henry's driver not alerting a signalman about where they were to stop in the forest, thus violating Rule 55.
