- "That's not fair! You can't make Sonny do your jobs!"
"Why not? It's not my fault he's silly enough to do them for me."
"I don't understand you sometimes."
"Nobody does." - ― Percy and Diesel
Sonny's Second Chance is the thirteenth episode of the twenty-fourth series.
Plot[]
After being given a chance to prove himself by the Fat Controller, Sonny does not think his chances are good when he is shown hostility by Gordon, who told Thomas and Percy that he is mistakenly a thief, and James when he saved him from a watermelon accident at Brendam, and thought he is a thief too.
It seems Diesel is the only one really willing to be his friend, but it turns out Diesel is just tricking Sonny into doing his jobs for him. Thomas warns him that Diesel is not to be trusted, which he finds out while pulling fish trucks.
Diesel arrives at Ffarquhar and talks to Percy about Sonny, but he does not believe him, and he refused to help him. Diesel tries to follow after him, but gets diverted into a siding, derails and is about to fall into a pit. Sonny reverses to the siding, derailing the fish trucks over the points and on the ground next to his tracks in the process, and saves Diesel. Although he had derailed the fish trucks, Sonny's heroic actions earn him praise from the Fat Controller as a really useful engine indeed.
When arriving at Knapford, Gordon and James apologised to Sonny for their pessimistic behaviour, and he officially became part of the North Western Railway.

Trivia[]
- Going by production order, this is the eleventh episode of the twenty-fourth series.
- The episode's title is similar to an old Disney Channel show, Sonny With a Chance.
- Diesel's rescue by Sonny is similar to his rescue by Thomas in Misty Island Rescue.
- This episode marks the final occurrences of a few things:
- Sonny's final episode with a leading role.
- Winston's final appearance in the original series and his final appearance until the All Engines Go episode, Driving Winston.
- The final episode to be written by Becky Overton.
- The final instance in which the title card is not shown at the very beginning of the episode and the eighth overall, the other seven being the seventeenth series episode, Steamie Stafford, the twentieth series episode, Henry in the Dark, the twenty-first series episode, Emily in the Middle, the twenty-second series episodes, Trusty Trunky and Hunt the Truck, the twenty-third series episode, Heart of Gold and Thomas and the Royal Engine from this series, respectively.
- When Sonny is going to save Diesel from falling into the pit, the buffer bump sound effect originally used during the fourth through twelfth series can be heard. The fifteenth series episode, Gordon and Ferdinand used it as well.
- In Poland, this episode premiered before the twenty-fourth series episode A New Arrival, so the audience would not know about Sonny.
- This episode was never aired in Germany and South Korea.
- In the Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Baltic Russian voice-overs, the UK dub can be heard in the background as a dubbing track was not used.
Goofs[]
- In one shot, Gordon's brake coach is in the middle of the express instead of at the back.
- When Sir Topham Hatt says "And what are those fish doing on the tracks?", the fish were actually on the ground next to the rails.
- In the Baltic Russian dub, the title is not read out loud for some reason.
