"It's a real flower mill now!"
― Thomas

Spring Special, later retitled Spring Time Special, is a magazine story.

Plot

It is a bright spring morning as Thomas pulls a Spring Special train through Sodor's beautiful countryside. Thomas, Annie and Clarabel take their passengers past rivers, farms, meadows and a plant nursery where pickers are picking tulips and other flowers for market. Eventually, Thomas stops at a station next to an old windmill. The guard tells Thomas' sightseeing passengers that the windmill is due to reopen in two days so it can sell flour again after undergoing repairs.

Just then, Harvey arrives carrying the windmill's new sails. As the crane engine lifts one of the sails into position, it swings and crashes against the side of the mill. Luckily, no-one is hurt, but the new sails are badly damaged. The mill manager hopes they will still be able to reopen on time. Then, Thomas has a bright idea which he shares with the Fat Controller who then speaks to the plant nursery manager.

The Fat Controller sends Edward to the nursery to pick up something special for the mill. Later, Thomas sets off with the Spring Special and, this time, the Fat Controller goes with them. When Thomas arrives at the windmill, his passengers were very surprised. The mill's sails are covered with flowers that Edward had collected. The flowers are excellent for hiding the damage on the broken sail. The mill manager thanks Thomas who quips that it's now 'Flower Mill' now.
