Stepney, re-titled Stepney the Bluebell Engine in 2011, is the twentieth book in the My Thomas Story Library series.

Plot

Stepney is sent to work at the quarry. That night, he is asked to take a night special to a building yard. Whilst returning home, Stepney gets lost. His driver and fireman look for help but while they are gone, two diesels arrive with the intentions of scrapping Stepney. Can someone else save him in time?

  • In one illustration, Stepney’s buffers are black.
  • In the Czech version of this book, the third and tenth illustrations are swapped, so it looks like Stepney's driver is asked to take the evening train, when they are at the Ironworks, and when Stepney's driver is said to be in trouble, they are at the quarry.
  • 'Arry and Bert's hazard stripes switch colours between the seventh and eighth illustration.
