"Ice and snow don't bother me with my caterpillar tracks!"
― Terence

Terence Breaks the Ice is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series. Originally published in an unknown year, it was reprinted in 2024 as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series with slight alterations to the images and text.

Plot[]

It's wintertime on Sodor once again and Thomas is collecting some trees to take to Tidmouth for the winter market. As he pulls up to the forest, the tracks are very icy so Thomas has to stop slowly and carefully. Terence is helping the woodsmen cut down the trees. Snow never bothers Terence because he has caterpillar tracks instead of wheels.

Sir Topham Hatt had asked Thomas to fetch the biggest tree in the forest for the Earl's winter party at Ulfstead Castle. Terence says there's an enormous tree on the other side of the frozen pond. Thomas is concerned the ice won't hold the weight of a heavy tractor, but Terence isn't listening.

The woodsmen cut down the big tree and then load it onto Terence's truck. As the tractor crosses back across the pond, the ice starts to crack. Thomas cries out to warn his friend, but it's too late. Thomas quickly asks his driver to attach some chains to his snowplough. Then, Thomas manages to pull Terence off of the ice just in time, but the big tree is left behind in the freezing lake. Terence thanks Thomas and admits you have to be sensible if you want to stay safe.

That night, Thomas and Terence both attend the party at Ulfstead Castle. They had given the Earl one of the smaller trees for his display instead. Terence apologises for losing the big tree, but the Earl doesn't mind at all; the tree may be small, but it is very beautiful. The Earl then thanks Thomas and Terence for a job well done.
