― Carly

The Case of the Missing Crane is a magazine story illustrated using images from the All Engines Go series.

Plot[]

One day, Thomas arrives with an urgent message for Carly. Emily has derailed at the top of Cannonball Curve and needs Carly's help. After promising Sandy she'll be back soon, Carly heads off to the rescue. On her way up Cannonball Curve, Carly hits a bump in the track and breaks her brakes. She manages to get Emily back onto the rails, but then she starts rolling down the hill. Carly can't stop and tries grabbing onto a sign with her hook, but she just pulls it out of the ground. Next, Carly rolls past Percy at McColl Farm and tries grabbing onto a switch with her hook, but her rope snaps. Carly finally comes to a rest in a muddy pit, but she's stuck fast.

Meanwhile, Sandy is beginning to get concerned because Carly has been gone so long. Sandy decides to be a detective and she and Diesel head to Cannonball Curve. On their way, Sandy and Diesel notice the sign that Carly had uprooted. Sandy inspects the sign and can see remnants of Carly's paint on the sign's pole.

Sandy and Diesel soon arrive at Cannonball Curve and they find the bump in the track. Diesel wonders if the bump could have broken Carly's brakes. The two friends follow the tracks back down the hill and soon meet Percy who had seen Carly whizzing by earlier. He tells Sandy and Diesel that he's never seen Carly go that fast backwards before.

Sandy and Diesel put all their clues together and come to the conclusion that Carly had rolled away out of control. They continue to follow the track and discover Carly's hook on the switch. Over the next hill, they finally find Carly in the muddy pit. Carly isn't worried; she knew Sandy would come looking for her and wouldn't give up until she was found.
