The Case of the Puzzling Parts is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series.
Plot[]
One day, forgetful Sidney bumps into Diesel and his parts become all jangly. Sidney has a job to do, but he cannot remember what it is. He knows he has a flatbed full of parts, but he doesn't know where he's supposed to deliver it to. Paxton overhears Sidney and comes across to offer his assistance. Paxton loves solving mysteries and tells Sidney that they'll be like secret agents. So, the two friends set off to solve the case of the puzzling parts.
Sidney and Paxton get their first clue at Wellsworth Scrapyard where Reg the crane tells them the parts look like new engine parts. As they head off to their next destination, Paxton reminds "Special Agent Sidney" to look out for clues. Sidney is so busy looking for clues, that he nearly collides with Thomas. Luckily, the little tank engine manages to stop just in time and he tells the two diesels that the parts on the flatbed look like diesel parts. Now, they just have to figure out which diesel engine the parts are for.
At the quarry, Sidney wanders off to look for clues in a dark cave. He tries to turn on his lamp to see where he's going, but it doesn't work. When he hears Paxton looking for him, Sidney tries to sound his horn, but that's broken too. Paxton rams into Sidney and they both shoot out of the cave. The bash causes Sidney's buffer to fall off. Paxton feels awful about bashing Sidney, but the bump causes Sidney to remember something. He thinks he remembers the parts are meant for Diesel. Paxton isn't sure; he thinks the parts could be for Sidney himself. He explains that Sidney's horn isn't working, his buffer fell off and his lamp won't turn on. The mystery is solved and Paxton happily helps Sidney back to the Dieselworks to be fixed.
