The Flying Kipper is a magazine story based on the episode of the same name from the first series of the television series.

Plot

One winter evening, Henry's driver comes and tells him that they'll have to be up early in the morning to pull the Flying Kipper. He notes how the special coal is working well and that he might pull the express. Henry arrives at the harbour at 5:00AM and leaves as soon as his train is loaded. He makes good progress even when there is snow and ice.

However, ice has frozen the points and a signal up ahead is set at danger but is down due to heavy snow forcing it down. Henry is unaware that a goods train is waiting in a siding to let his train pass by. The driver, fireman and guard are drinking cocoa in the brake van. The driver says that the kipper is due and they leave just in time. Henry collides with the train at a high speed and derails and is badly damaged in the process.

The Fat Controller arrives and he assures Henry that the accident is not his fault. He also states that Henry will go to Crewe to have a new firebox and won't need special coal anymore. Henry enjoyed being at Crewe but is glad to come home and many people gave him cheers seeing him in his new shape. Even Gordon is jealous of how well Henry pulls the express now.
