The Grass is Greener is a cancelled episode of Jack and the Sodor Construction Company.

Plot

On a demolition site, everyone is extremely busy, except for Alfie, who spends all day digging. He is fed up and asks if he can swap jobs with Jack who spends the day flitting about on the site. The next day Jack spends the day continuously digging and Alfie, now doing Jack's job, clatters from one side of the site to the other all day long. He gets exhausted.

Jack enjoys his break but becomes restless. That night, Jack asks Alfie if they can switch back, but exhausted Alfie is already asleep.

Trivia

  • The document of this episode's plot outline (titled "Jack and Alfie Swap") was created on 24 April 2002, along with those of Alfie Has a Secret and Isobella Gets Steamed.[1] In the outline document:
    • The title of the episode is given as "Freaky Friday or The Grass is Greener".
    • At some point this episode was known as "Friendship Story". This might be because "a Jack and Alfie friendship story" is given as the story concept in the plot outline. Writer Will Ing was contracted to write "Friendship Story" on 27 March 2002.
  • "Freaky Friday" shares its name with a 1972 children's book and "The Grass Is Greener" shares its name with a 1960 romantic comedy film.
  • This episode would have featured the Pack working at a demolition site. In the "DEMOLITION SITE" storyboards for Alfie Has Kittens, "JACK AND THE PACK: SERIES 1. EPS. 2-8" is written at the top. Since Alfie Has Kittens is the second episode, this could mean that this episode is the eighth.
  • The outline mentions Jack's stabilisers, which he only has in his original concept art featuring his scrapped backhoe.
  • The plot is similar to the seventeenth series episode, The Switch.
