Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki

The Helpful Horses! is a magazine story from 1993.

Plot[]

It was harvest-time on the Island of Sodor, and as Thomas pulled a goods train on his branch line, he saw his friend Terence pulling a big carted filled with sheaves of corn. At the next station, Thomas' trucks are unloaded, and a lorry arrives to collect the materials for a nearby factory that they were carrying. When Thomas sets off back down his branch line, he wonders if Terence had delivered his load by then, but is surprised to see two big horses pulling the cart instead.

Stopping at a signal, Thomas sees Terence standing in the corner of the field. Terence tells him that one of his caterpillar treads broke, with the shire horses now pulling the cart until he can be repaired. Thomas is surprised to see how the shire horses can do the same work as a tractor, and is prepared to head off again when the signal changes when a large noise is suddenly heard; one of the truck's coupling had snapped and was blocking the line. Thomas's driver asks the farmer for help, who unharnesses his shire horses who pull the truck into a siding. Before steaming off, Terence remarks to Thomas that the shire horses can do the same work as an engine too.
