"My favourite thing is to deliver the mail!"
― Percy[src]

The Mail Train is a train that consists of rolling stock used to transport letters and parcels.

The train is usually pulled by Percy and it is noted to be his favourite job. On occasions, Thomas and Nia have taken the mail train when Percy is unable to.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The mail vans are based on the Southeastern & Chatham Railway Diagram 960 Parcels and Miscellaneous Vans (PMV), introduced in 1919. This van was designated the standard for the Southern Railway, and remained in production, updated as the Diagram 3103, until 1951, remaining in regular service until 1986, with a few surviving on departmental duties into the 1990s. These vans were used primarily for the transportation of letters and parcels.

Livery[]

The mail vans are painted red with gold envelopes with wings on their doors. They have grey wheels and a black roof and running board.

Trivia[]

  • The mail van's 2D design has undergone many changes from the design used in the original series:
    • The mail logo is now gold instead of white.
    • The van is much smaller overall to match Percy's new size.
    • The van has a hatch on its roof.
    • The van no longer has visible axleboxes or bogies.
    • The bracing on the ends and doors of the van returns to being black as it was prior to the twenty-second series.
    • A dark red border with a yellow stripe is added to the sides.
    • The van no longer has rivet detailing.
  • While the mail train usually consisted of multiple vans in the original television series, in All Engines Go it usually consists of only a single van. A second van was later introduced in the second series episode A Very Percy Valentine's Day.
  • From Off the Rails onwards, the area underneath the bottom set of hinges on the front and back ends of the vans changes from red to black.
