The Slowest Race in the World is a magazine story illustrated using images from the All Engines Go series.
Plot[]
One day, Diesel and Thomas have just lost a race to Kana again. They wonder how she does it, to which she explains that speed is just her thing. Diesel and Thomas are getting a little tired of constantly losing every race with Kana, is Diesel suggests they have a go-slow race instead, where the slowest engine to Vicarstown wins. Soon, the three engines slowly set off on their way.
After a super-slow start, they eventually meet Bruno, who is impressed with their careful speed. Once the three friends have explained to Bruno what they are doing, the little brake van wants to join in too. The engines slowly make their way up Cannonball Curve. It is easy to go slow on the way up, but coming back down again is a different story. Thomas brakes as hard as he can, but it is no use and he keeps going faster. Luckily, Bruno has enough power to slow everyone down. Diesel, Thomas and Kana all couple up together and Bruno applies the brakes.
Next, they have to pass through Crumble Canyon. They stay very quiet, but a loud squawking bird causes a boulder to fall down. Kana has to use all her speed to power the engines through the canyon before the boulder can block the exit. It is not long before the three engines and Bruno are on the last stretch of track to Vicarstown Station. But their slow speed soon causes a traffic jam of engines behind them. All the other engines peep their whistles in frustration.
At the back, Percy has one more delivery to make and is anxious to deliver it on time. So he hops off the rails and puffs his way ahead of the slow racing engines. The rough ground causes Percy's wheel to start wobbling and, as soon as he is back on the rails again, it falls off. Percy is out of control and heading towards the station, so Kana, Diesel, Bruno and Thomas leap into action in order to save their friend. Once they catch up to him, Bruno uses his brakes to slow Percy down just in time.
At Vicarstown, Sandy arrives and fixes Percy's wheel in no time. But Kana is disappointed, as it looks like everyone lost the race. So Thomas suggests they race back to Tidmouth, and thus, the go-slow race is back on again!
