“You're getting a bit of a big head, James!”
―James' driver

The Smartest Engine is a short magazine story.

Emily and James are both very proud of their smart paintwork and shiny domes. They decide to have a contest to see who is the smartest looking engine. James puffs passed the works, and sees the workmen using a big saw. Nosey James wants to know what they are doing and goes for a closer look but gets covered in dust.

  • In one illustration, James' cab roof is white instead of black.
  • The plot mentions that Emily has a dome when she does not; she has a steam valve.
“Welcome to the Steamworks, my friend!”
