The Smells of Sodor is the twenty-sixth and final episode of the third series of Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go.

Plot

Thomas is tapped to deliver a sealed, sweet-smelling boxcar. But when he loses the boxcar, Thomas and his friends must use their sense of smell to track it down again.

  • This is one of four episodes from this series written to incorporate a food and baking theme, the others being Bells are Ringing, Cake It Easy and Pizza Picnic Problem.[1]
  • This episode marks the only episode of two things:
    • Toby's only speaking role in the third series.
    • The only episode in the third series to be written by Craig Carlisle.
    • The only All Engines Go! series finale to not feature Annie and Clarabel.
  • This episode marks the first of four things:
    • James' first appearance, Cranky's first speaking role and the only episode in where Annie and Clarabel do not appear in a series finale since the original series episode, Thomas' Animal Friends.
    • Toby's first appearance in a series finale since the original series episode, The Christmas Tree Express.
    • Winston's first appearance in a series finale in the franchise.
  • This is the final episode released during Britt Allcroft's lifetime, as she would die on Christmas Day six months later.
  • Apart from laughing, Winston has no dialogue in this episode.

Goofs

  • In one scene of Toby shunting the boxcars, his funnel and bell are missing and when Thomas says "Whoa!" a few times, but his mouth doesn't move.
  • When Henry passes by Thomas and Percy, Henry's smokebox frame is layered over his left steam pipe and front wheel arch.
  • In two shots of Thomas sniffing Gordon's cargo, Gordon's tender is missing.
    • In the same scene, when Percy is explaining to Gordon why Thomas is sniffing Gordon's cargo, Gordon's tender is layered over his boxcar.
  • Tess is missing from Kellsthorpe Wharf.
  • In the final shot of the song:
    • Edward's wheels on his right side are missing.
    • Henry's lamp is missing.
