Trivia[]

  • Awdry likely intended for these stones to be based on various pre-historic burial sites on the Isle of Man. These were once underground tombs, which were unearthed by erosion over many centuries.[1] However, in their cameo in James and the Diesel Engines, they were interpreted as more similar to Stonehenge, a famous monument in the United Kingdom consisting of much larger stones, aligned to the movement of the sun.
  • Medieval Sudrians, having lost the knowledge of the original purpose of the stones, interpreted this site as a site for pagan or satanic rituals. The site and the village nearby were thus called Keeill-y-Deighan (Church of the Devil). The town's name was then shortened to Killdane.
