The Walking Bridge appears to be a freelance design, however it could have been inspired by the passenger car Pioneer used on The Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway between 1896 and 1901.

Unlike the Walking Bridge, Pioneer's legs were stationary and ran on rails placed on concrete sleepers under the shallow coastal waters. It was also powered by an electric propulsion motor, unlike the Walking Bridge which is powered via treads moving the legs. Despite its official name being Pioneer, it was nicknamed Daddy-Long Legs. Due to safety concerns, maintainenice costs and the instillation of a beach protection barrier, which would have required the line to be diverted, the railway was closed and Pioneer was scrapped.
