Thomas' Day Off is the twenty-third episode of the first series.

Plot[]

One day, Thomas and Percy are heading to Knapford to collect their deliveries. Thomas wants an adventurous delivery, but he can't decide which delivery he wants. Because of this, he ends up not getting a delivery. Upset, Thomas asks Gordon, but Gordon only tells him he has a day off. Excited, Thomas heads to The Maintenance Yard to play on his obstacle course. But soon enough, he realizes it's not fun playing without friends. He looks around the yard for Carly and Sandy, but he can't find anyone. He then sings a sad little lament, before bumping into an old boxcar. Thomas 'befriends' this boxcar and names him Boxy. Thomas then proceeds to show Boxy around the Island.

At Whiff's Recycling Plant, Thomas and Boxy discover an old beachball, which Thomas names the Orb of Destiny. Thomas and Boxy follow the orb around the Island, Thomas now finding joy in being alone. At the docks, the Orb of Destiny is blown into the water, as Cranky lifts Boxy onto Bulstrode. Confused, Thomas asks Cranky to put Boxy back down on the tracks, but then decides to have Cranky lift himself onto Bulstrode. Thomas explains to Bulstrode about their adventure, and how they are trying to get the Orb of Destiny back to the Fairy Queen. Bulstrode, Thomas, and Boxy set off to sea to get the orb back to shore. They encounter Skiff, who manages to push the orb back to the Island. Bulstrode lets Thomas and Boxy off, and the latter two continue their adventure.

Thomas now sings about how he enjoys having an imagination, as he and Boxy follow the orb back to Tidmouth Sheds. At the crossing, they encounter Diesel, and Thomas tells him about their adventures. At first Diesel doesn't notice the oddness in the story, but after crossing the tracks, he is shocked and confused. Thomas then arrives at Tidmouth and tells Percy and Kana about his adventure, with Diesel adding some details. Thomas returns the orb to Kana, the Fairy Queen, before the orb is breezed away by the wind. Thomas decides that his adventure is over, and that he had fun while it lasted.
