The Coal Mine Engines

There are two coal mine engines from the Mainland.

Biography

Before coming to Sodor, Ryan used to work with these engines at the coal mines during the winter.

Technical Details

Basis

The tank engine is based on an LB&SCR Class E2 0-6-0T, built with extended side-tanks. Thomas is another member of this class.

The saddle tank engine is based on an Avonside 0-4-0ST. Percy shares the same design.

Livery

The tank engine is painted brown with black and yellow lining. The saddle tank engine is painted in a greenish black colour with yellow lining and has a brass dome.

  • These engines are digitally-edited versions of Bachmann Thomas and Percy models. The faces was sourced from a 3D-printed Shapeways Thomas face and a Hornby Percy face respectively.[1]

Pullman

This article is about 'the diesel shunter'. You may be looking for 'the super hero'.

Pullman is a diesel shunter who works at the Coal Mines.

Biography

Pullman could be seen coming out of a tunnel pulling coal trucks backwards. He startled Thomas, Oliver, Yong Bao and Toad who were investigating the coal mines regarding the mysterious accidents being caused by the diesels and the Troublesome Trucks.

Technical Details

Basis

Pullman is a based on a British Rail (BR) Class 06 0-6-0 diesel locomotive, in particular the Hornby model of the class which has additional toolboxes. The real engine carrying the number 06008 (formerly D2437) was scrapped in 1980. Due to a decline in shunting, BR was forced to reduce its shunter fleet in the 1960s and 70s, resulting in mass withdrawals. Only one class member, number 06003 (formerly D2420) was preserved.

Livery

Pullman is painted BR blue and white with yellow hazard stripes on his front and rear. He has red siderods.

His name is painted on the sides of his toolbox and his number is painted on the sides of his cab in white. He has the British Railway logo on the sides of his engine.

The Lost Engine

The Lost Engine was a ghostly tender engine who once lived on the Mainland.

Biography

According to Flying Scotsman's story, this engine was scrapped. Every Halloween night, the Lost Engine returns to Sodor, looking for engines to add to his "Train of the Scrap". When an engine hears the sounds of his ghostly chains rattling along the rails, it is already too late.

Technical Details

Basis

The Lost Engine is based on a BR Standard Class 6. A Workshop Engine shares the same basis.

Livery

The Lost Engine was painted in the BR mixed-traffic black livery.

  • The Lost Engine was made from a Hornby BR Standard Class 6 with its smoke deflectors, bogies and tender removed. The face was sourced from a 3D-printed Shapeways James shocked face.[2]

Diesel's Cronies

Diesel's Cronies are a giant gang of diesel shunters who work for "Devious" Diesel. They look similar to Diesel, but had distinguishable features, different faces and tones of voices.

Biography

Diesel was their leader. They have an ideology opposed to steam engines. They would assist Diesel in his attempts to take over the Island of Sodor.

Technical Details

Basis

These diesels are based on the British Rail (BR) Class 08 diesel-electric shunter. The BR Class 08s were in fact the most successful shunting engines in the world with 996 of them built. Over seventy of them are preserved by heritage railways.

Diesel, 'Arry, Bert, Splatter, Dodge, Paxton, Sidney, Ulli, the Mainland Diesels, Fernando, and the international diesels are other members of this class.

Livery

These diesels are painted in the BR mixed-traffic black livery, which was the standard livery for shunting engines from 1948 until the mid-1960s. Diesel's Cronies all have a "D" logo on their sides.

  • These diesels were made from the Adventures, Take Along, Take-n-Play, Collectible Railway, Motor Road and Rail, TrackMaster, Wooden Railway, Bachmann and Hornby Diesel merchandise. In addition, the BR Class 08 diesel models manufactured by Hornby and Tri-ang Railways were also used.

The Ghost Engine

The Ghost Engine was a ghostly tank engine who once lived at the Experimental Engines Yard.

Biography

According to Merlin, once a year on Halloween night, the Experimental Engine Yard is haunted by engines who were never finished. Over time, the engines became rusted piles of scrap. Now the ghosts of engines long gone haunt goods sheds everywhere, calling out into the night, trying to find their missing pieces.

Technical Details

Basis

The Ghost Engine is based on Minaz No. 1173, a 0-4-0ST+PT locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works that worked at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Sugar Mill in Cuba. Victor shares the same basis.

Livery

The Ghost Engine was painted grey with orange lining and black and orange hazard stripes on her bufferbeams. She has "N.C.B." written on her tanks in white and her number (5) on her cylinders.

The Lost Temple Engine

The Lost Temple Engine is a steam engine from Mexico.

Biography

According to Gator, this engine helped some thieves steal treasure from the Lost Temple. But when three mysterious boulders knocked his train of trucks, he ran away and has never returned to the temple since.

Technical Details

Basis

This engine is based on an LMS Stanier 5MT "Black Five" 4-6-0, minus the tender. Henry is another member of this class.

Livery

This engine was painted dark brown.

Shinkansen

Shinkansen is a high-speed multiple electric unit from Japan.

Biography

Shinkansen passed Thomas and Ace while they were travelling through Tokyo. Thomas was surprised, and Ace told him that the Shinkansens are bullet trains and super-fast streamlined engines.

When Gordon, Nia and Hiro were in Japan searching for Percy, Gordon was bragging about being the fastest engine in Japan. Just then, Shinkansen sped past, making Gordon feel very embarrassed.

Technical Details

Basis

Shinkansen is based on the N700 Series Shinkansen. It is a high-speed train with tilting capability developed jointly by JR Central and JR West for use on the Tokaido and San'yō Shinkansen lines since 2007, and is operated by JR Kyushu on the Kyushu Shinkansen line.

Livery

Shinkansen is painted white with blue lining and a grey chassis.

Hinata

Hinata is a tank engine from Japan.

Biography

Once, Hinata was pulling a goods train when Thomas almost ran into him while he was looking for Nia in Tokyo. He shouted to Thomas in Japanese, telling him to watch where he was going.

Technical Details

Basis

Hinata is based on the SR USA class. They originated as the USATC S100 Class, which were designed for shunting duties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. After the war, they were used on railways in Austria, China, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Palestine, the United States, and Yugoslavia. Rosie is another member of this class.

Livery

Hinata is painted amaranth red with cream lining. He has a cream stripe with "B6" written in burgundy on the sides of his tanks.

The Japanese Tank Engine

This engine is a small red 0-4-0 tank engine from Japan.

Biography

When Thomas was a runaway in Japan, he passed this engine at a shunting yard. She called out to him in Japanese, telling him to be careful.

Technical Details

Basis

This engine is based on a Dowlais Ironworks Class D 0-4-0T locomotive.

Livery

This engine is painted red with a brass dome and copper chimney cap.

  • This engine was made from a red Hornby Class D 0-4-0T from the "Summertime Coca-Cola Train Set".

Other Characters

Two original characters named Red Knight and Young Tucker created by Matt Michaud made cameo appearances in The Return of Diesel and Steelworks of Scares respectively.
