Plot[]
One day, Thomas is waiting at a station when Gordon shuffles in with some trucks. Thomas asks if he can smell something, Gordon thinks Thomas is the cause of the smell but Annie and Clarabel can't smell anything, Thomas then teases Gordon for falling into the ditch saying that he can smell ditch water. He then leaves feeling pleased with himself but Annie and Clarabel have big respect for Gordon and feel ashamed.
Thomas later goes to a mine to fetch some trucks, the mine has tunnels funning underneath it, the weight of trucks can be supported but not engines. Thomas sees the danger sign and has hatched a plan to get past it; as his driver switches the points, Thomas jerks forward into the siding when the ground gives way and Thomas falls into a hole! The Fat Controller tells him that Gordon will have to rescue him as the ground is not strong enough for a crane.
On his way to the mine, Gordon laughs about Thomas' accident but quickly sets to work. When he arrives, a strong cable is attached to Thomas and Gordon pulls him out of the hole. Both agree they’re in disgrace so they form an alliance and they both set off for home.
