The Fat Controller has been invited to London to be given an award by the Queen! Thomas must take him to his destination, but they are faced with many obstacles along the way. They even meet a shiny royal engine named Duchess, who is also in a big hurry! Will Thomas get The Fat Controller to London's Victoria Station on time?

- The front and back covers of the book are illustrated in the style of The Railway Series whilst the illustration on the front cover is illustrated in the style of C. Reginald Dalby.
- Additionally, the start of the book features a two-page spread of the illustration of the Coal and Coke station from the beginning of the Railway Series books.
- There is a small biography on the Reverend W. Awdry at the end of the book.
- In 2020, as part of Save for Stories UK, Anne, Princess Royal, did a reading of the book.
