"What a busy engine! I declare this railway the best!"
― The inspector

Thomas in Charge is a magazine story illustrated using photographs from the television series.

Plot

An inspector is visiting the island and all of the engines have to be busy for his visit. Thomas thinks that if all the engines are busy working at the docks, it will please the inspector. First he tells Percy to leave the station to go to the docks and then he tells Mavis to go from the quarry to the docks. But when he visits the station and the quarry, the inspector is not pleased to see the locations deserted. When the inspector finally visits the docks, he witnesses the engines collide with some coal trucks, sending coal dust all over the inspector and the Fat Controller.

Thomas is very sorry. Later, when the Fat Controller and the inspector are cleaned up, they revisit the docks where Thomas is busy working alone. The inspector is very impressed and declares that the Fat Controller's railway is the best!
