Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki

Thomas the Tank Engine's Dream is a story booklet written by Christopher Awdry to coincide with both the release of Thomas & Friends-themed stamps released by the Isle of Man Post Office and the 50th Anniversary of The Railway Series.

Plot[]

Thomas is happy to learn from Sir Topham Hatt that he has received a letter from his friend Caledonia about how he shall be able to travel to the top of Snaefell, the tallest mountain on the Isle of Man. While he has heard much about the island, Thomas is unable to visit his friend as his wheels would not fit on the narrow gauge track. He ultimately falls asleep after a hard day's work and begins to dream that Bertie and him has been invited to the island.

After arriving to the port of Douglas via boat, Thomas is lifted by a steam crane and placed on a specially laid-out track so he can visit his friend at the station. When he arrives, Maitland is pulling the mail train to Port Erin, and Thomas then dreams of enjoying the climb to Keristal and seeing the ocean view, as well as the sight of bluebells lining Crogga Glen. Arriving at Ballasalla, Thomas reunites with Bertie at the level crossing while Hutch pulls the morning passenger train.

Now at Port Erin on holiday, Thomas comes across Viking, a German diesel on holiday who is going to Laxey to see a special mail train go to the top of Snaefell the following day. Thomas is eager to join him, but when he wakes early, he finds that it was raining and cold. Once the engines arrive at Laxey, they learn from the stationmaster that no engine has been able to reach the top of the mountain. Thomas suggests that he could clear the way with his snowplough. With a good head of steam, Thomas valiantly clears the path, helping the Railcar take the mail train to the summit.

As a thank you for his help, Caledonia arrives at Laxey to show Thomas the large wheel used to pump water to the mines. Thomas is excited to see some double track and decides to race his friend back to Douglas. Before the race can begin, Thomas is then awoken from his dream and is scolded by Sir Topham Hatt for being late to work. While he might not have visited the island, Thomas was still very happy to have seen all the wonderful places in his dream.
