Thomas the Tank Engine 1 (Norwegian: Lokomotivet Thomas og vennene hans 1) is a 1994 Norwegian VHS release featuring the first eleven first series episodes narrated by Trine Lossius Borg.

It was re-released in Norway on VHS in 1998 and on DVD in 2003 under the title Thomas and the Guard (Norwegian: Thomas og konduktørene). It was also released under that same title on VHS in Sweden in 1999 and 2001 and on DVD in Finland in 2007.

When originally released on DVD in Sweden in 2002, it was titled Thomas and the Guard and Edward, Trevor and the Garden Party (Swedish: Thomas och konduktören och Edward, Trevor och trädgårdsfesten), featuring an additional eleven third series episodes seen on the Edward, Trevor and the Garden Party Swedish VHS. A later Swedish DVD was released in 2005 featuring only the eleven first series episodes.

It was released in Iceland on VHS and on DVD in 2004 under the title Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends 1 (Icelandic: Tommi togvagn og vinir hans 1) featuring the first nine first series episodes.

Thomas er et lite lokomotiv, men kvikk og freidig. Han bor på jernbanestasjonen på fantasiøya Sodor. Lokomotivstallen må han dele med flere større lokomotiver — Gordon, Edward, Henry, James og Toby. Thomas is a small locomotive but quick-witted and cheeky. He lives at the railway station on the fantasy Island of Sodor. He has to share the engine shed with several larger locomotives - Gordon, Edward, Henry, James and Toby. But no one works as hard as Thomas, or so he thinks. That's why he likes to tease the others when they sigh and complain: "We get no rest, we get no rest!"

Now you have the opportunity to get to know Thomas and all the others on the railway in Sodor, where engines and coaches sometimes collide but always become good friends in the end.

Trivia

  • This is the first Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends VHS released in Norway, Sweden and Iceland. The 2002 Swedish DVD is the first Thomas & Friends DVD released in Sweden. The Icelandic DVD is also the first Thomas & Friends DVD released in Iceland.
  • All variants of this release feature an image from the third series episode The Trouble with Mud on the front cover.
  • The 1999/2001 Swedish VHS releases feature the 1998 remastered versions of each episode, while the Norwegian releases and the 2002/2005 Swedish DVD releases feature the 1993 individual episode masters of each episode.
  • On the 2002 Swedish DVD, the end credits of each episode are removed, except at the end of the DVD. After Percy, James and the Fruitful Day, a frame from the end of Heroes is shown, then the end credits from Heroes play.
  • The 2005 Swedish DVD includes the end credits for each episode.
  • The Finnish DVD release features the 2004 restored versions of each episode, featuring Finnish titles for all episodes except Thomas and the Guard, which is shown with English titles.

Goof

  • The descriptions on the back covers of the 1998 Norwegian VHS, 2003 Norwegian DVD and all Swedish and Icelandic releases state that, in Troublesome Trucks, James had trouble with coaches but that did not take place in Troublesome Trucks. They also state that Edward helped James in Troublesome Trucks but, although Edward offered to help, James declined and summited Gordon's Hill himself.
    • Additionally, the Icelandic description states that, after Edward helps, everything goes worse.
