TrackMaster was a range of battery-operated Thomas & Friends toys that was produced between 2007 and 2014.

History

The range was launched in 2007 after the previous manufacturer, TOMY, lost their distribution rights to HiT Toy Company to distribute their Motor Road and Rail range for most countries, except Japan. In the UK however, TOMY distributed HiT's TrackMaster line until 2010.

In 2009, Fisher-Price picked up the licence to manufacture the TrackMaster line after HiT Toy Company went defunct. The line remained mostly the same, despite the switch in manufacturer, however many engines would later receive updated releases based on their CGI renders used in Hero of the Rails onwards.

The line is similar to TOMY's previous Motor Road and Rail, particularly in its earlier years. The main difference at the start was the unique track system, resembling actual track more than TOMY's interpretation.

In 2012, Mattel (the parent company of Fisher-Price) acquired HiT Entertainment for 680 million dollars (USD). This essentially meant that Mattel had full control over Thomas merchandise and no longer had to be held to HiT's standards, as was the case before. Shortly after this in 2014, the classic TrackMaster line was discontinued and replaced by the revamped TrackMaster Revolution line. This new line was more cost effective, using cheaper materials and with each engine using the same chassis mould. The track system was also changed up in this new line.

To avoid confusion, this article will only cover the original TrackMaster line originally produced from 2007-2014. Information on the 2014 TrackMaster Revolution line (later renamed to simply Motorized) can be found on Motorized (2014).

Trivia

  • In 2012, most tender engines were redesigned so that their motor and battery are stored inside the engine itself, and the tender could now be removed easily without harming the model. The only major character exempt from this redesign was Gordon. Gordon was indeed planned to receive a redesign in this same format, but it was cancelled for whatever reason. What is interesting to note, however, is that many counterfeits of Gordon's model seem to be based off the cancelled redesign, now having both the battery and motor stored inside the engine.
  • Whiff and Madge are missing their eyebrows.
  • Isobella and Brenda are the only members of the Sodor Construction Company without a TrackMaster release.
  • Alfie's model was only released in Canada.
  • Monty's model was unofficially released in Poland stores and has become exceptionally rare, however some models have been found in other countries such as the UK.
  • Flip-face models of Gordon and Percy were seen on the back of some 2007 boxes, but were never released.
  • The Slippy Sodor Thomas' funnel is simply a regular funnel painted red.
  • Most of the characters in the TrackMaster Fisher-Price range hadn't appeared in the CGI series at the time of their release. This includes Duck, Donald, Douglas, Bill, Ben, Harvey, Jack, Oliver, Max, Monty, and most of the Skarloey Railway engines.
    • Other characters in the range, such as Stepney, Arthur, Molly, Neville, Hank, BoCo, Dodge, Dennis, Duke, Freddie, Colin, and some of the other Sodor Construction Company vehicles, never appeared in the CGI series at all, although some (particularly the latter four engines and Colin) were originally considered to return in CGI at some point or were at least indirectly mentioned in the CGI series.
      • For example, a TrackMaster Fisher-Price Freddie were made although he was not seen in the show since 2008. However, he was planned to return in either Blue Mountain Mystery or the sixteenth series, but this was scrapped for unknown reasons.
  • Since 2010, the buffers in some sets have been depicted as a brick wall
  • TrackMaster track was used twice to break the world record for the longest toy train set. The first was at the Thomas Land Theme Park in the UK in 2008 and later at The Workshops Rail Museum in Australia in 2010.
  • Some of the newer tender engines have their battery compartments as part of their motors, contained within the engine boiler to avoid having a wire that could break between the two parts of the engine. As of 2014, this change has been made to every engine as they all use the same chassis.
  • Emily and Gordon are the only Steam Team tender engines not to be redesigned in 2013. Gordon was also not the only one to have a separately coupled tender in either of the original TrackMaster ranges. His TrackMaster Revolution model would eventually have one.
  • Since 2011, the engines now have holes in their wheels so that they can be held into the packaging by plastic sticks for security purposes. Oddly enough, the TrackMaster Revolution line retained these holes, but the sticks were only utilised with the first redesigned Greatest Moments packs. The holes were finally removed in late 2017.
  • As of 2013, the Big Friends and Little Friends packs, as well as most of the Greatest Moments packs, each have a CGI promo of the engine or vehicle included. The only exceptions in this case for the Fisher-Price range are Molly, who has a promo from the model series due to her never appearing in CGI, and Stepney, Dodge, and Freddie, who each have a placeholder image of Thomas on their respective packaging instead.
    • Toby, Duck, Bash, Skarloey, and Peter Sam also have this issue, despite the fact that they all appeared in the CGI series, particularly Duck, who had returned to the show in CGI around the same year.
      • However, a CGI promo of Toby is featured on his TrackMaster Revolution packaging. This also applies to Duck in the TrackMaster (Fisher-Price) Duck's Close Shave Greatest Moments pack and Freddie on his TrackMaster Revolution packaging (albeit being a CGI-esque promo).
        • Freddie later featured a model series promo on his TrackMaster Revolution packaging starting in 2018.
  • Nelson's alloys and front beam are black instead of red.
  • Harvey and Mighty Mac are unpowered. A powered coach (a works unit coach for Harvey and a cream and green coach for Mighty Mac) is used to push them. This is because Harvey's crane takes up too much space to house a battery, as does Mighty Mac's end-swapping function. These engines and their respective coaches have special couplers to make them easier to push.
  • Stephen's prototype showed him with two lamps and a smoother bufferbeam.
  • Connor and Caitlin's coaches are closed vans with stickers on the sides.
  • Bash and Dash's prototypes show moss on their cabs.
  • Belle, Timothy, Murdoch, Hank, Splatter, Dodge, 'Arry, Bert, Paxton, Diesel, Den, Skarloey, Rheneas, Peter Sam and Freddie's side-rods do not move and Molly, Duke, Bertram and Mighty Mac lack them completely.
  • Duncan is the only narrow gauge engine in the TrackMaster (Fisher-Price) range without a Big Friends release.
  • The truck in the Castle Quest set does not have a rear coupler and is abnormally tall.
  • Bash's prototype has a Skarloey Railway blue coach and a brown truck with different tools.
  • Dart's prototype has grey wheels but was later changed to the correct colour in the final model.
  • As of 2015, the talking engines now have separate cars/trucks or tenders. This also applies to the R/C engines as of 2012.
  • An edited image of Jeremy's model was used in the twentieth series episode Letters to Santa.
  • Henry's talking model versions uses his whistle sound from the second series episodes, Duck Takes Charge and A Close Shave.
  • Talking Salty uses his seventh series horn sound.
  • Talking Diesel uses his Misty Island Rescue horn sound while the UK/US redesigned one has his original horn sound.
  • Talking Victor's Big Splash has a different whistle sound.
  • TrackMaster Buster has a removable roof, with its own product information listed on the underside as if it were separate from Buster altogether.
