Ulfstead Castle is an ancient medieval fortress on the estate of Sir Robert Norramby. The Estate Railway runs around the grounds. It is often used as an event venue, and a place where engines retire.

History

In the medieval era, the castle was owned by King Godred. Nowadays, the castle is part of the estate owned by Sir Robert Norramby, who commonly hosts special events at the castle, including fireworks displays and Christmas parties.

A series of railway lines (most of them dual gauge) run through the castle and the surrounding estate. The castle has three stations: one near the entrance gates, one inside the castle, and one with a glass canopy near the back of the castle. The castle also has its own turntable and a shed for the Estate Railway's engines.

Millie works and lives here, while she does a variety of jobs including helping the groundskeeper and taking tourists around the estate in open-topped carriages. Stephen later began working here and was eventually joined by Glynn.

The North Western Railway has a branch line which runs to the castle from Maron, climbing the steep hill which the castle is situated atop. The line also connects to a mining system running beneath the castle. It was in these mines that Stephen discovered King Godred's crown, which is now on display inside the castle. The Skarloey Railway also runs to the castle via another branch line from Lakeside.

The castle has its own park area which is home to several deer including one that Luke once befriended. The park area is tended to by the groundskeeper, who has his own lodge on the castle's grounds. In the eighteenth series, a Dinosaur Park was also built on the castle grounds.

In the twenty-fourth series, a big Ferris wheel was set up outside the Castle on the grounds, as well as several tents for the Technology Fair. While the tents were taken down after the fair, the ferris wheel remained.

Trivia

  • Concept art of the castle for King of the Railway by Guru Studios shows that Ulfstead Castle would have been much larger than the final design, and the railway line would run through the main building. Tidmouth Bay would also be used as the railway station for the castle and Colin was going to be based there.
  • The Ferris wheel that was seen at Ulfstead Castle in the twenty-fourth series for the Technology Fair utilises an enlarged version of Stephen's driving wheels along with the bodies of Red Coaches for the passenger compartments.
  • In the French dub, Ulfstead Castle is called le Château des Elfes (meaning: the Castle of the Elves).
