Vicarstown is the largest city on the far eastern side of Sodor and the final station on the Main Line before the bridge leading to the Mainland.

History[]

In the third series, Vicarstown is a station managed by the Other Railway and is the changeover point for the North Western Railway. The station is small, with two platforms and three tracks. Immediately to the station's west is a large gantry signal box. Douglas was flagged down here by the yard foreman while helping Oliver and Toad escape from scrap.[1]

Since The Great Race, Vicarstown is a much larger station, consisting of eight platforms with a lower level beneath them. It is built in an elegant Victorian architectural style and covered by a glass roof, with clock towers and signal gantries at each end.

The station is situated atop a viaduct, which contains shops in several of its arches. An electric tramway runs along the roads underneath the viaduct and a cathedral is located in the town nearby the station.

Since Journey Beyond Sodor, Rosie has been permanently reallocated as the main shunter here.

  • Vicarstown Bridge - a bascule bridge over the Walney Channel, connecting the Island of Sodor to the Mainland.
  • Vicarstown Goods Depot - a diesel depot, where Oliver, Toad and later Stepney were saved from scrap.
  • Vicarstown Dieselworks - a large repair yard complex specifically for servicing diesel locomotives, located slightly west of the main town.

Trivia[]

  • Before Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure was developed, Vicarstown was intended to return to the show in the original 2015 script of The Great Race. Additionally, three new trams were to be introduced to run the tramway around the town underneath the station.
  • As seen in the concept art for the CGI series, several different designs were tested for Vicarstown Station before the final design was decided upon.
    • In one concept, the station was on ground level, with access to streets without walking down.
    • In another concept, the station's engine shed was more level, with a gentle curve, unlike the final version.
  • According to the concept art for the CGI series, Vicarstown's architecture is inspired by various stations including:
  • From the twenty-second to twenty-fourth series, Vicarstown appears in the end segment of every episode.
  • In the French dub, Vicarstown is not referred to by name, but by epithet: "la ville des vicaires" (meaning: the town of the vicars).
  • Vicarstown Drive in Columbus, Ohio, is named after the town.
