Walter is a saddle tank engine who was purchased by Sir Stephen Topham Hatt for the North Western Railway to operate the Arlesburgh-Harwick extension.
Biography
The Fat Controller felt he needed an extra engine which was small but powerful to give extra assistance on the Little Western, as Donald and Douglas were overworked. In order to assess the capability of such an engine, he borrowed Wilbert from the Dean Forest Railway for a period in 1993.[2]
Following his successful trials, the Fat Controller told Wilbert that he knew where he could get another engine exactly like him.[3] This engine - named Walter - was one of the many Austerity 0-6-0STs awaiting restoration around England. Walter was eventually purchased and restored at an unspecified date. He helped to construct the extension to Harwick.[4]
Technical Details
Basis
Walter is based on an Austerity 0-6-0ST. This type was designed by Hunslet for War Department use in 1943, continued to be built for WD and continued in industrial use until 1964. A total of 485 engines were built by various locomotive manufacturers, and 70 were preserved following the decline of steam.
Wilbert, Sixteen and Warrington share the same basis. Other members of this class were featured in Thomas and the U.K. Trip and the Down at the Station segments.
Livery
Walter is painted black.[1]
In the thumbnail image for the Talyllyn Railway's official YouTube upload of Sodor in 2025, he is depicted as having red lining with inverse rounded corners around his saddle tank, along with his name painted on the sides of his saddle tank in yellow. His buffer beams and coupling rods are also shown to be painted red.

Trivia
- Walter's name and livery were unknown until the 2025 updated reprint of Sodor: Reading Between the Lines.
- An edited image depicting Walter appears in the thumbnail for the Sodor in 2025 lecture upload on the Talyllyn Railway's official YouTube channel. This was created using a stock photograph of Accurascale's OO scale model of National Coal Board (NCB) North East No. 59 (product code ACC3107), with Walter's name and red lining around the saddle tank being added.
- According to Luke Ryan - the Talyllyn Railway volunteer who originally edited the image - the use of this specific engine as a base was purely done for fun and was not influenced by the Awdrys.
