Washdowns are places where engines are cleaned and polished. The first washdown was introduced in the third series, situated near Tidmouth Sheds. This later moved to the Repair Yard. Another was later seen at Maron station. In the ninth series, there was one beside Knapford and in the tenth series, there was one at Kellsthorpe. Then there was one with a single-road shed and a water column, situated just off the main line in the twelfth series and carried on in this form throughout the CGI Series. This washdown is located between Crosby and Crosby Tunnel. They are especially James' favourite locations since they help get his paint clean.

There are also washdowns on the Skarloey Railway; one at the quarry, one by the depot and one at the Village Square.
