Wellsworth is a town located near Sodor's south-west coast, at the far northern end of the Brendam peninsula. As it is the start of Edward's Branch Line, the station is also known as Edward's Station.

History

Wellsworth station consists of two platforms - each with its own station building - connected via a footbridge, which spans the three through roads of the Main Line. At one point, the station also had a dedicated banker siding for Edward next to the larger building, though this has since been removed.

The Mail Depot is located in the town here, and Percy often picks up and drops off mail at the station.[1] The station is also home to a large shunting yard and an engine shed.

Official Description

From the Writer's Bible:

Wellsworth Station and Yards: Functional and unglamorous, Wellsworth is a mainline station with platforms on both sides and a goods line running through the middle. With a small goods yard with a turntable, this is Edward's domain. He works the yards and takes passenger and goods trains back and forth to Brendam Docks. It is the last station before Gordon's hill. Edward is often used as a 'backing' engine to help the engines pulling heavy loads up Gordon's Hill. Several branch lines lead away from the yards into the wilder countryside and spooky areas. Henry, susceptible to fright anyway, often thinks he sees ghosts along these lines. Percy and Thomas use the lines when delivering or picking up trucks from the quarries and farms.

Trivia

  • Unlike in The Railway Series - where Wellsworth is a seaside town said to be no more than 20ft above high tide level - David Mitton's maps of Sodor depict Wellsworth in the television series as being situated atop cliffs and further inland. This is likely due to Wellsworth being located near the Viaduct, which places the Main Line much higher above sea level compared to The Railway Series.
  • In the French dub, Wellsworth is referred by its original name only during the eighth series, but afterwards is referred to by epithet: "la gare du puits sec" (meaning: the station of the dry well).
  • In merchandising, Wellsworth is occasionally misspelled as "Ellsworth".
  • Wellsworth Drive in Columbus, Ohio, USA, is named after the town.
