Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki
Thomas & Friends

Several Workshop Engines have appeared in the Thomas & Friends and its associated tie-in media.

Percy's Workshop Friends[]

The Workshop Engines were engines who lived in the Workshop with Percy before he was brought to the Island of Sodor.

Biography[]

After Thomas left to run his branch line, The Fat Controller was in desperate need of another tank engine. Eventually, he went to a workshop on the Mainland, where they showed him a range of engines of various shapes and sizes.

He finally chose a small green saddle tank engine, whom he would name Percy. Later on, Percy would mention to Edward that the engines at the workshop would have to "wheesh" loudly to make themselves heard.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

Excluding Percy, five engines in total are seen at the workshop in the first series. From left to right, the engines shown are reused models of Gordon, Thomas, James, Henry and Edward, each covered with a tarpaulin and with their tenders (in the case of the tender engines) removed.

In the My Thomas Story Library series, two other engines are seen next to Percy. The first is a maroon saddle tank engine resembling Percy's design, while the second is dark blue and appears to be based on a Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST. The latter is also the basis of Wilbert, Sixteen and the Austerity Engine in The Railway Series.

In the Plarail Thomas Collection, Donald is used to portray one of the workshop engines, covered with a tarpaulin to replicate the engines seen in the first series.

Liveries[]

The engines seen in the first series and the Plarail Thomas Collection are painted in identical liveries to the engines whose models they reuse.

In the My Thomas Story Library series, the first engine is painted maroon, while the second is neon blue with red lining and yellow window frames.

Edward's Workshop Friends[]

These Workshop Engines were a trio of engines who Edward encountered while visiting a workshop on the Mainland to be mended. He was quick to befriend these engines, due to their friendly nature and positive attitude towards him.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The first engine is based on a British Rail Class D16/2 diesel-electric locomotives. Originally designed by Oliver Bulleid for the Southern Railway, three engines of this class were eventually built during the early 1950s by British Railways. Due to being non-standard, however, all three were withdrawn in 1963, before finally being scrapped in 1968 with no survivors.

The second engine, which has smoke deflectors, appears to be based on a BR Standard Class 6, built between December 1951 and March 1952. Withdrawal of this class began in December 1962 and ended in June 1966, with none surviving. A new-build locomotive, No. 72010 Hengist, is currently under construction based on this design.

The final engine, seen behind Edward, is another steam engine. Its exact basis is unclear, as only its smokebox, boiler and topfeed are visible.

Liveries[]

The diesel-electric engine is painted silver. The first steam engine is painted green with red lining and distinctively has green smoke-deflectors. The last steam engine is painted salmon with black lining.
